In 2024, Tatton Park in Cheshire is celebrating 150 years of Maurice Egerton, the last owner of Tatton, and his remarkable legacy as a pioneer aviator, intrepid traveller, and a man of great inventive skill.
The location is presenting two new Mansion exhibitions where visitors can learn more about Maurice Egerton and get up close to his incredible collections from around the world.
Running between 23 March and 3 November, the Safari Escapades exhibition delves into life on safari during the 1920s-1950s when Lord Egerton was exploring great swathes of Africa. His meticulous travel diaries leave a fascinating insight into where he went, what he saw, who he met, and what specimens he collected. See his safari camping kit on display for the first time and discover the adventures that happened along the way.
The Life Behind the Lens exhibition, taking place at the same time, showcases some of the photographs Lord Egerton took during his lifetime. A prolific photographer from childhood, the collection captures his many passions, from early flight with the Wright Brothers and attending the first ever Grand Prix, to his extensive travels around the world.
Both exhibitions are free to enter during a pre-booked group visit that includes the Mansion.
Meanwhile, renovations of the Italian Garden are underway, with the most extensive restoration work in 40 years, incorporating more climate-resistant plants to the landscape. Tours of the Japanese Garden return with the warmer weather, and groups can enjoy the completed refurbishment of the pinery and orchard pergola.
