Visit Wales is presenting a three-day itinerary exploring gardens in North and Mid Wales. The list features many popular National Trust locations, Snowdonia National Parks’ gardens, plus landscapes in Portmeirion, the charming Italianate-style village.
The programme begins at Cwm Weeg near Newtown in Powys, featuring a three-acre formal garden set within 24 acres of wildflower meadows and bluebell woodland. Moving to Powis Castle near Welshpool, complete with its terraced garden of rare plants with a Italian and French influence, the Mid Wales selection also includes Chirk Castle and Erddig.
Day two moves north and starts with Bodnant near Conwy, home to five Italianate terraces and manicured lawns, leading down to a wooded valley and stream. The tour then proceeds to Anglesey, starting with Plas Newydd House and Garden featuring views over the Menai Straits. The tour then moves to the island’s Plas Cadnant Hidden Gardens, which features an upper woodland, a secret valley, and a classis walled garden.
The third day on the suggested itinerary travels into Snowdonia, first to Plas Brondanw, an Edwardian garden divided into ‘rooms’, each secluded by their own arrangement of hedges. Finally, the tour concludes at Portmeirion, surrounded by its wild ‘Gwyllt’ gardens which contain many rare Himalayan flowering trees.
