Kynren, the outdoor theatre performance covering 2,000 years of English history, is taking place again this summer, between 19 July and 13 September in Bishop Auckland. This year, the spectacle has a new focus on the Victorian era.
Kynren is enhancing the overall scene for its audiences with new props and costumes, projections, innovative choreography, and updated music inspired by the Victorian era. This reimagined performance centres around Queen Victoria and features over 150 performers and more than 20 horses, bringing the vibrant essence of Victorian society back to life, with scenes recreating Victorian London.
The development of the Victorian era scenes has also involved significant construction work, centring around a catwalk, delivered in 12 sections, each weighing one-and-a-half tonnes and measuring six metres by four metres. The Kynren team has recently installed the catwalk, with the steel manufactured locally by D&S Services based in Peterlee, highlighting the production expertise of skilled workers in the area.
The Victorian era is one of 29 iconic moments from English history, myth and legend featured in the show. The 90-minute extravaganza focuses on Arthur as he travels through 2,000 years of history. The show includes Boudicca’s battles with the Romans, through to the World Wars, via the Viking era, the Tudors, and the fate of Charles I.
