In the light of recent Government advice, and with heavy hearts, Historic Royal Palaces reports that it has made the decision to close its six sites from Friday 20 March until further notice.
“Between them, the six extraordinary historic buildings in our care have witnessed 1,000 years of history,” says a spokesperson. “They have survived many tumultuous moments in the past; however, we must act to protect their current custodians: our staff, and you, and your future visitors. The welfare of our incredibly dedicated team and our visitors is our primary concern.
“The gardens at Hampton Court Palace and Hillsborough Castle will remain open for you to enjoy. At times like this, we all need to see beauty more than ever. Please visit the gardens and continue to tread in the footsteps of many people in history, who, like us, have experienced difficult times and used these beautiful spaces to relax and recuperate.
“The palaces have bounced back in the past – and so will we. When we return, as an independent charity, we will need your support more than ever. Please keep in touch with us via our website and social media channels, where we will continue to share the stories we had planned to share with you in person.
“Finally, we promise we’ll look after the ravens at the Tower of London in your absence. They’ll be safe in the fortress until we see you again.”
