One of the country’s best preserved medieval castles, Bolton Castle in North Yorkshire, has joined CTA, offering a great day out for groups.

Located near Leyburn with stunning views across Wensleydale, a visit includes the opportunity to see the castle’s five floors, including a dungeon, as well the gardens. Much of the gardens are accessible, including herb and rose gardens, plus a small vineyard.

The castle has remained in the same family’s ownership for over 600 years and includes a fascinating history. Mary Queen of Scots was supposedly held at the fortress for six months, and her room is dressed to show how she spent her time in captivity.

In addition to daily falconry displays, archery, and wild boar feeding, Bolton Castle offers an extensive programme of events which bring the story of the castle alive, including its acclaimed re-enactor days. Bespoke group tours of the castle and gardens are also available.

For refreshment, the castle’s tea room offers freshly baked cakes and menu including lunches and afternoon teas, based on ingredients from the Bolton Estate as well as local suppliers.
