Caerphilly Castle, the second largest castle in Britain and the largest in Wales, has reopened to visitors, with its refurbishment including state-of-the art digital exhibits.

Managed by Cadw, refurbishment includes the Great Hall, decorated to reflect the grandeur of how it might have appeared in its medieval heyday. With digital enhancements, visitors are transported back to the 1320s and the scene of a royal feast that was once hosted in the same spot.

The new interactive exhibits tell the stories of the castle along with the people who lived in it over the centuries. The legends explain power struggles, alliances, and betrayals between those who built and fought over Wales’ largest fortification.

In addition to the works in the Great Hall, Cadw has opened access to the medieval water-gate passageway, which connects the hall to the southern lake. Cadw has also carried out major repairs to the Inner East Gatehouse that dominates the approach to the castle’s inner ward.

Accessibility within the castle has been improved as part of the development, including new paths and ramps, while a wildflower garden has been added to the setting’s green spaces.

Coach operators can also register with the Cadw Tour Operator Scheme to become a member of Cadw’s online group booking scheme.
