Following a major project to conserve and share the stories of Belsay Hall, Castle and Gardens, the Northumberland attraction near Morpeth is keen to welcome coach groups in 2024.

The striking hall, inspired by Greek and Italian architecture, features the imposing Pillar Hall, as well as the coffered ceiling and elaborate decoration in the reception rooms. Groups can pre-book guided tours of the hall to delve deeper into its history that dates originally from the 1200s.

The castle also features thirty acres of enchanting gardens, with something new to discover every season. The gardens have been revived by renowned gardener Dan Pearson, restoring its individuality while maintaining its historic character.

Ravines cut out of rock lead to the “jurassic-feeling” Quarry Garden, which has its own microclimate, enabling a wide variety of flora to grow, including a mixture of exotic ferns and over 40 species of lilies. For a more in-depth look at the gardens, groups can book guided tours with the gardens team.

At the medieval castle, groups can explore the maze of rooms, some featuring elaborate medieval wall paintings. In the 18th-century wing, visitors can still see the old cooking range and fireplaces.

Refreshments are available in the old Coach House and catering packages are offered to groups. Coach parking is available but this must be pre-booked. Groups of 11 or more visiting Belsay Hall will receive a 15% English Heritage discount, plus one free place per group for a driver and a tour leader. To book, e-mail bookings@english-heritage.org.uk.
