Discover Durham has announced a range of developments in and around the city, leading with the newest of The Auckland Project’s attractions. The Faith Museum, now open, explores the ways faith has shaped lives and communities across Britain through rarely seen objects, artwork, and national treasures spanning 6,000 years.
Meanwhile, as the countdown to the 200th anniversary of the opening of the Stockton & Darlington Railway in 2025 continues, work also steams ahead on Locomotion’s New Hall. From spring 2024, groups will be able to explore the new exhibition hall that will house an additional 45 railway vehicles from the national collection, making Locomotion home to the largest collection of historic rail vehicles, under cover on one site, anywhere in the world.
At the Beamish Museum, the 1950s town, latest additions include two mineworkers’ homes. The recreated cottages show visitors what life was like for the region’s retired miners in the 1950s. Next year, even more exhibitions are due to open at the museum, including a Georgian tavern and pottery, 1950s cinema, toyshop, and electrical store, plus Georgian-themed accommodation.
