Ad Gefrin, located in Wooler, Northumbria, brings together a contemporary museum with a pioneering Whisky Distillery, celebrating the best of the region. The site includes the archaeology of the seventh century royal palace, discovered only four miles away, along with the richness of produce in the region today.
In the re-imagined Great Hall, visitors take a step into the life of the court, discovering the lives, stories, and personalities of the people of the time brought to life through film. The museum showcases some of the finest examples of the creativity, artisanship, and culture of Northumbria’s Golden Age, with national loans from the British Museum alongside fascinating pieces from the original site.
Sitting in the heart of barley-producing country with five local farmers growing exclusively for Ad Gefrin, England’s northern-most whisky distillery benefits from Cheviot water pumped up from beneath the distillery. Tours follow the full journey of the whisky, from the arrival of the grain to the maturing of the filled casks, and visits end with the chance to taste the award-winning spirits under expert guidance.
Groups can conclude their visit with food and drink on the terrace or around the fire, plus a choice of menus from the bistro, serving familiar dishes and local favourites presented in new and inspired ways.
