The Football Museum of Wales and Wrexham Museum has now opened to the public, offering coach tour operators a free new attraction combining Welsh football, local history and community heritage. The attraction opened its doors on 25 September.
Located in Wrexham city centre, the museum provides an option for day trips and short breaks, with appeal for football supporters and groups interested in Welsh culture and history.
The museum brings together two collections under one roof. One half explores the story of Welsh football, from grassroots participation to the national team, showcasing iconic players, memorable moments and the culture surrounding the game. The other presents Wrexham’s history, including its industrial past and the people and communities that have helped shape the city.
The Football Museum of Wales houses the official Welsh Football Collection, the largest public collection dedicated to the sport in Wales. Exhibitions explore football’s influence on Welsh identity and community life, including the importance of Welsh-language communities, supporter culture and the diverse experiences that have shaped the national game.
Wrexham has strong historical connections with football. The Football Association of Wales was founded in the city in 1876, while Wrexham AFC, established in 1864, is the oldest professional football club in Wales. The Racecourse Ground hosted Wales’ first home international match in 1877 and remains an important landmark for football supporters. Today, the team is famed for its ownership by Hollywood duo Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, featured in the hit documentary Welcome to Wrexham.
For coach operators, the museum offers a flexible addition to a Wrexham itinerary, including free entry. Its combination of football and local history broadens its appeal beyond dedicated sports fans, while the city-centre location makes it a potential stop alongside other local attractions. The museum is open six days a week, closed on Tuesdays.
