Enjoy a house steeped in over 400 years of history, with gardens that offer 40 acres of tranquillity. Built by Robert Cecil, in the grounds where Queen Elizabeth I spent much of her childhood, Hatfield House is home to centuries of historical treasures collected by the Cecil family.
The picture perfect Gardens date from the early 17th Century, when Robert Cecil employed John Tradescant the Elder to collect plants from all over Europe for his new home. The Tolbooth Tavern in Edinburgh is part of the original Canongate Tolbooth which was built in 1591. This medieval building was used to collect tolls from travellers entering the burgh at the Canongate. The ground floor became The Tolbooth Tavern in 1820.
The Tolbooth Tavern is a cosy traditional Scottish pub full of character and charm. It boasts a fantastic spot along the Royal Mile where the small exterior gives way to a spacious bar and mezzanine dining area.
We have fine Scottish ales, malt whiskies and gins for you to enjoy whilst our chefs serve up hearty home-cooked Scottish fayre using locally sourced produce; where better to slake your thirst and quell your hunger be you on the tourist trail or looking for a relaxing dinner experience.
Our house favourites include Cullen skink, Tolbooth burgers, freshly landed Scottish fish ‘n’ chips and our Tolbooth steak and sausage pie.
The Tolbooth Tavern is centrally located on the Canongate towards the bottom of Edinburgh’s Royal Mile. There is limited on-street parking and pay parking nearby. Waverley Train Station and the tram line are just a 10-minute walk away as well as an abundance of local visitor attractions.

Awarded ‘Theatre Building of The Year 2023’ at The Stage Awards, Shakespeare North Playhouse is a ground-breaking new venue located in Prescot, Liverpool which opened in July 2022. The multimillion-selling books spawned two Herriot films and the BBC TV Series ‘All Creatures Great and Small”, the longest running ‘must watch’ Sunday night TV series of its era and now, a remake on Channel 5 TV is attracting new audiences.
Success has come by working with the group tour market on activities designed to make the attraction a centrepiece for tours of Herriot Country. Groups now account for 39% of the visitor numbers. The World of James Herriot team love to welcome groups.
Herriot Country Tourism is the collection of over 200 businesses of visitor attractions, hotels and bed and breakfasts, country pubs and restaurants that operate in North Yorkshire. The area covers locations where all the filming scenes are located in the districts of Hambleton, parts of Harrogate, Richmondshire, Grassington and Skipton, Ryedale and the North Yorkshire Coast, plus the Yorkshire Dales National Park and North York Moors National Park.
